What CMS can and can't do

We don't want your (maintenance) money.

Content Management packages are great for text changes, adding new pages, and a variety of functions such as where content is reused. If you presently use a 3rd party to make your simple text updates, that process adds time and costs you money. For our part, we'd rather be working on building a new site rather than making text changes. Which is why this firm says "we don't want your (maintenance) money". Naturally if you do need this service, we are still more than willing to provide it.

This technology doesn't alleviate the need for a graphic designer however; computers just aren't creative. If you change photos or icons on your site often we are happy to provide graphic production services.

Content Management systems don't turn a poor writer into a Hemingway. But if you previously combined the webmaster role with a content review role you are still in a better position. By separating the two roles, you're webmaster doesn't need to write well. You may also already have someone on staff who writes well such as in Marketing where it makes sense to add the content review role.

Lastly, none of the content management systems can truly deal with the strange codes that Microsoft Word insists on inserting when you cut and paste content (Not even Microsoft Content Management Server). We recommend that you paste your content into a plain text editor such as Notepad first and then cut and paste it into your webpage from there. This extra step is unfortunate, but content management is still very much worth pursuing because it does save a lot of time. And the systems are getting better.
